Amazing, unique figurine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The figurine refers to an event in 1531, when the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a resident of Mexico at the time, and requested that a church be built on the hill of Tepeyaca. Since then, the event has been used by Mexican artists and has inspired them. To this day, pilgrims from all over the world go to the site of the apparition and emphasise the religious nature of the pilgrimage. The statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe is produced in the artisanal Talavera style. The statue is decorated with characteristic floral patterns and colours related to the ceramic production in the town of Talavera de la Reina, i.e. shades of green, blue, yellow, red and black. The dense natural pigment and glaze applied to the figurine create a near-3D effect. Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very popular religious element in Mexican interiors. The inhabitants of Mexico are mostly Catholics who worship the Virgin Mary.

The Talavera method is a way of making ceramics, which was brought to Mexico by Spanish colonisers in the 15th century. The ceramics are characterised by floral decoration and the application of thick natural pigments and glazes. Talavera faience are products sought after by collectors all over the world.
